Pullman clock tower

Chicago’s Pullman Historic District was designated a National Monument in 2015 by President Obama, making it the first National Park Service unit in Chicago. Now, the monument’s new state-of-the-art Visitor Center is having its grand opening this Labor Day weekend.  The center will be housed in the historic Pullman Company clock tower building.

A must for railroad buffs, and those interested in the history of Chicago and America’s labor movement, the monument showcases the planned industrial community created by George Pullman, the sleeping car magnate. Beyond its place in railroad history, the famous Pullman Strike of 1894 led President Grover Cleveland to create Labor Day as a federal holiday.
