The Metra Electric Line will be partially shut down on two weekends in December, Dec. 7-8 and Dec. 14-15, due to extensive construction associated with the South Shore Line’s expansion plans, work that will also benefit Metra Electric riders. Train service will terminate and originate from the 18th Street Station, with buses replacing trains between Millennium and 18th, and the line will use a Sunday schedule both Saturday and Sunday on those weekend days.

The details:

  • The Metra Electric Line will operate a Sunday schedule on Saturday and Sunday on both weekends. Schedules for Metra Electric Line Sunday service can be found here (scroll down for the weekend schedule).
  • No trains will operate between the Millennium and 18th Street stations on both weekends and the Van Buren Street and Museum Campus/11th Street stations will be closed.
  • Buses will shuttle riders via the McCormick Place busway between the Millennium and 18th Street stations on both weekends. The buses will not stop at the Van Buren Street or Museum Campus/11th Street stations.
  • For ADA customers, Pace Paratransit vehicles will shuttle ADA riders via the McCormick Place busway between the Millennium and McCormick Place stations on both weekends. The vehicles will not stop at the Van Buren Street, Museum Campus or 18th Street stations.

Customer service agents will be at 18th Street, Millennium and McCormick Place stations to make sure passengers safely transfer between trains and the buses.

The construction project is part of the $650 million expansion of NICTD’s South Shore service and is necessary to expand capacity through the area north of 18th Street to accommodate additional South Shore trains. The work includes track realignments and upgrades to the catenary system that supplies power to the trains. When the project is completed, both Metra and South Shore riders should experience improved travel times through the area.
