Metra is planning a new yard near Woodstock that would reap many benefits for UP Northwest Line riders and nearby residents.
The new yard would consolidate operations from the current Barrington and Crystal Lake yards into a larger, modernized layover facility. The objectives are to generate operational cost savings, bring an estimated 100 new jobs to the area, support expanded rail service to serve anticipated demand, provide expanded train storage, improve operational efficiencies, encourage transit-supportive land use in station areas, and promote sustainable travel patterns in McHenry County.
Metra has identified a preferred site for the project just northwest of Woodstock and is now conducting a required federal environmental review, although no significant impacts are expected. There is still a great deal of planning and design work to do, and funding to be identified, before the yard can be built.
